This course takes all six novels in the order she wrote them, beginning with the playful Gothic parody of Northanger Abbey and ending with the luminous, elegiac Persuasion. Along the way we meet some of the most beloved characters in English literature—Elizabeth Bennet, Emma Woodhouse, Elinor Dashwood—and ask what makes Austen's world so irresistible more than two centuries after she created it.
