New Content! When you were in New York City, you probably gazed up at the Chrysler or the Empire State Buildings. Have you wondered where the style of these buildings—commonly known as “Art Deco”-came from? How does one characterize the style? We will examine how Art Deco emerged as a style of architecture in the 1920s and 1930s-taking cues from a 1925 Paris show entitled Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels. In addition to architecture, we will analyze how Art Deco lent its forward-looking or streamline style to furniture, decorative arts, apparel, jewelry, and modes of transportation.
