Controversial Discussions: The Psychology of Conversation

The world today can feel more divided than ever. From social issues to politics, it’s easy to get caught up in quick opinions and heated arguments. But what if we could learn to listen, question, and discuss—even when we disagree? In this engaging and thought-provoking camp, you’ll explore what it takes to have meaningful, respectful conversations about challenging topics. Discover the psychology behind communication, practice effective questioning and interviewing techniques, and learn to spot common errors in logic and reasoning. You’ll also build research skills as you explore real-world issues that matter to you. By the end of the camp, you’ll create two projects: a fact sheet that presents an unbiased view of your chosen topic and a conversation guide brochure designed to help others discuss the issue constructively. Together, we’ll learn how to debate ideas, not people, and how open dialogue can strengthen communities. MCPS has approved this camp session for 10 Student Service Learning (SSL) hours.
