Elections. What comes to mind when you hear that word? November? Politics? Controversial issues? Elections can include all of those things—or even none of them. Who citizens elect dictates everything from speed limits, prices at the grocery store, and public transportation, to the big national decisions that shape our country. If you want to understand the inner workings of any society, take a look at its elections. In this course, you’ll explore American elections past and present—who was elected, how, why, when, and what made it possible. While presidential elections often grab headlines, state and local elections can impact our daily lives even more. Together, we’ll uncover how political parties form, evolve, and influence voters. As part of the program, students will engage in a hands-on service project designed to strengthen civic awareness in our community. You will create nonpartisan voter education materials for future first-time voters, develop presentations to share with peers, or partner with community organizations that encourage voter participation. Through preparation, action, and reflection, you’ll see how knowledge of elections connects directly to empowering others. If you want to take a deep dive into American elections and political parties—and make a difference in your community—this summer course is for you. MCPS has approved this camp session for 5 Student Service Learning (SSL) hours. Instructor: Patrick Lukulay, MCPS teacher.
