Do you want to achieve consistent success at school? Students learning to achieve more (Summer SLAM) is a class for middle and high school students who want to achieve consistent success at school. You will improve your college career awareness. You will learn healthy ways to deal with school stress with mindfulness techniques and what it means to truly have mental and emotional wellbeing. This course will teach you how to learn but will also provide coping mechanisms to deal with the pressures of academics. We know that school is stressful but there are study skills, habits, and techniques that can help you handle the stress in a healthy way. Many students earn decent grades, but may have been inconsistent in their performance. Summer SLAM is a hands-on study skills class that focuses on executive functioning, achievement motivation and college awareness. In addition, you will create a survival guide for your appropriate grade level (middle or high school) that can be shared with students in MCPS. The survival guide will include what students learned in the class to provide peer to peer advice on how to study, develop a growth mindset, and how to thrive in school. The Survival Guides will be published online and shared at the participants’ school to better their school community. MCPS has approved this camp session for 10 Student Service Learning (SSL) hours. Camp may have fieldtrips to local colleges. In partnership with Milner Educational Consulting.
